Phishing: When criminals send emails claiming to be from a recognised organisation, to trick you into revealing information needed for Identity theft. This may be in the form of asking you to visit a fake website, or clicking on an email attachment/link.
Card-skimming: When criminals capture and access data from the magnetic strips on your credit and debit cards. This usually happens at ATMs and points of sale.
One-time password (OTP): A unique and time-sensitive password used as additional security when you access your Internet banking profile.
Nigerian 419 scam: This is a money transfer scam, where you are asked to make a payment in advance in order to process the release of funds from a foreign country/bank. You are normally notified of of these funds via email and telephone.
Deposit refund scam: When criminals contact you to tell you that an amount of money has been “mistakenly” deposited into your account and ask you to “return” it.
Keyloggers: Logs all keystrokes entered on a computer it has been installed and activated on. The keystrokes are then retrieved by criminals and used to steal your money or gain access to your sensitive information. Keylogger is a type of software known as spyware.
Masked URLs: URLs that look authentic, for example those that read standardbank.co.za, but which are hiding another URL. It looks like these links will take you to a Standard Bank website; instead they take you to another site where they will ask for and gain access to your details.
