Standard Bank has been a committed and long-term sponsor of cricket since 1997 and, over the last 13 years, has significantly increased its investment in the game to encompass prestigious international tournaments, the national South Africa ODI and Pro20 squads as well as South Africa’s premier domestic tournament, the Standard Bank Pro20 series.
At an international level, Standard Bank has been the main sponsor of the South Africa “Proteas” ODI team since 1997. In 2005, the bank extended its investment in the national side and became the International Pro20 team sponsor.
Standard Bank is also the headline and sole sponsor of International Pro20s which feature the “Proteas” playing International 20 over matches against touring sides to South Africa.
Domestically, Standard Bank launched the Pro20 series in 2004 and continues to be the title sponsor of the four-week tournament played between six domestic franchises featuring the country’s top players. The Standard Bank Pro20 competition has fundamentally changed the way in which cricket is enjoyed in South Africa, and has been responsible for reversing declining audiences and generating renewed interest in domestic cricket. The enthusiastic support and subsequent success of Pro20 was a major contributing factor to South Africa being given the honour of staging the first-ever ICC World Twenty20 tournament in 2007.
As the long-term sponsor of the Standard Bank ODI and International Pro20 teams, and our desire to connect with local cricket fans through the shared passion of the game, we also recognise the stature of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) global tournaments. We have partnered the ICC on five occasions – as a Local Partner to the ICC Cricket World Cups held in South Africa in 2003 and the West Indies in 2007; as well as the ICC World Twenty20s held in South Africa in 2007 and England in 2009. Our most recent local sponsorship is of the ICC Champions Trophy held in South Africa in 2009.
